South Korea

A country that wired itself to the future while keeping its old palace courtyards swept and tidy. In Seoul, neon signs and smartphone towers rise above wooden hanok houses where tea still arrives in quiet, careful cups — and the whole world has now learned to dance to its songs.

What is South Korea?

Its full name is the Republic of Korea, established in 1948 on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula. Around 51 million people live in this compact, densely packed country, paying in won. It sits beside the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone, the border that separates it from North Korea.

The transformation here is astonishing. Within living memory South Korea was a war-torn, largely rural society; the "Miracle on the Han" turned it into one of the world's most advanced economies, home to giant electronics and car brands. Today it is a cultural superpower too, exporting K-pop, films, dramas and beauty trends across every continent.

Mountains, coasts and a volcanic island

The Korean Peninsula is wrinkled with mountains, so cities and farms nestle in the valleys and along the river plains. The Han River runs through the heart of Seoul, lined with parks and bridges, while the country's two very different coasts offer tidal flats, fishing ports and island chains.

Off the southern tip lies Jeju, a volcanic island of black rock, wind, citrus groves and gentle hiking trails, often called the honeymoon island of Korea. Four distinct seasons paint the landscape in cherry blossoms, monsoon rain, autumn maples and winter snow.

Dynasties, alphabets and a river miracle

Korea's history runs deep: the Three Kingdoms, the Buddhist Goryeo era and the long Confucian Joseon dynasty. Its proudest cultural moment came in the 1440s, when King Sejong introduced Hangul, a purpose-built alphabet designed so that ordinary people could learn to read in days rather than years.

The twentieth century was cruel — Japanese colonial rule, then the devastating Korean War of the 1950s. From the ruins came factories, highways, schools and the famous work ethic that built the modern economy. The Atlas questions trace the full arc from ancient kingdoms and royal palaces to the Olympics, the tech giants and the Korean Wave.

Pop idols, screen thrillers and a fermented table

South Korea is now one of the world's great entertainment engines. K-pop groups fill stadiums across the planet, its films have won the industry's top prizes, and its dramas are binge-watched in dozens of languages. Esports are treated as a serious spectator sport, with professional gamers cheered like athletes.

The kitchen is built around fermentation: kimchi, the spicy preserved cabbage served at every meal, plus bibimbap, grilled meats, savory pancakes and street food eaten standing in the rain. People still wear the elegant hanbok for holidays, practice taekwondo worldwide, and take visible pride in doing everything fast — from internet speeds to midnight delivery.
